The Brookline Breeze is a challenging 5K fitness run/walk on the rolling hills of Brookline, a neighborhood located in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The 5K course takes runners and walkers from Brookline Memorial Park to the city border with Dormont and back again. The 3.1 mile route follows Brookline Boulevard to Pioneer Avenue, then turns left and proceeds to a turn-around near West Liberty Avenue, then back again.

Breeze Day fun begins at 7:00am with package pickup and pre-race registrations. A live band will take the stage at 8:00am. The first event of the morning is the One-Mile Mini-Breeze for the young ones, followed by the One-mile Dog Walk. The Mini-Breeze course is laid out around the perimeter of Brookline Park. Then, at 9:00am, it's time for the main event, the 5K run/walk.

The Brookline Breeze 5K race, which attracts top athletes from around the Tri-State area, along with hundreds of local runners, is sanctioned by the USATF (Three Rivers). Event timing is provided by Runners High.

Friday Night Car Cruise And Breeze Day Festivities

Package pickup and late registration are available the evening before the race beginning at 6:00pm. During this time, the Brookline Recreation Center will host the Annual Breeze Week Car Cruise. The lower parking lot will be alive with vintage car enthusiasts. Participants and event-goers can pick up their packs and enjoy a fine selection of classic vehicles.

Pickup and registration continue the following morning on race day. Water Stops will be located along the course and there are plenty of refreshments available for all participants near the finish line. As the results are confirmed, live music will play while face painters and balloon artists roam the crowd. An awards presentation and gift raffle follow the race, with the grand prize being a pair of tickets for an upcoming Pittsburgh Steelers football game.

The Brookline Breeze offers something for all ages to enjoy. Come celebrate physical fitness, and the character and charm of the community of Brookline, on Saturday, August 9, 2014. Race proceeds benefit the Brookline Area Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, Brookline Area Recreation Programs, and Brookline Regional Catholic School.

Brookline Breeze Tradition

The Brookline Breeze began in 1982, when three local fitness enthusiasts (Jim Turcol, Mike Radley and Danny O'Brien) had an idea to start a running event encouraging healthy living and promoting the community of Brookline. Over the past three decades, the Brookline Breeze has evolved into one of the signature events on the yearly Pittsburgh Citiparks running calendar.

Dan O'Brien fires the starter's pistol at the inaugural Brookline Breeze on September 3, 1982.

The innaugural Breeze winners were Bruce Kemmerer and Susan Gailey. Six-time winner Barry Harwick set the 5K course record with a time of 14:56 in 1987, a mark that has stood for a quarter century. The women's course record is held by Karen Koehler, who clocked in at 17:26 in 1989. Six women have repeated as top female runner, with Ann Mazur topping that list with four-in-a-row from 2005 through 2008.
