Brookline Breeze Tradition
The Brookline Breeze began in 1982, when
three local fitness enthusiasts (Jim Turcol, Mike Radley and Danny O'Brien) had
an idea to start a running event encouraging healthy living and promoting the
community of Brookline. Over the past three decades, the Brookline Breeze has
evolved into one of the signature events on the yearly Pittsburgh Citiparks
Dan O'Brien fires the starter's pistol
at the inaugural Brookline Breeze on September 3, 1982.
The innaugural Breeze winners were Bruce
Kemmerer and Susan Gailey. Six-time winner Barry Harwick set the 5K course record
with a time of 14:56 in 1987, a mark that has stood for a quarter century. The
women's course record is held by Karen Koehler, who clocked in at 17:26 in 1989.
Six women have repeated as top female runner, with Chris Scarvelis and Ann Mazur
topping that list as four-time winners.
