The Brookline Breeze began in 1982, when three local fitness enthusiasts (Jim Turcol, Mike Radley and Danny O'Brien) had an idea to start a running event encouraging healthy living and promoting the community of Brookline. Over the past three decades, the Brookline Breeze has evolved into one of the signature events on the yearly Pittsburgh Citiparks running calendar.
The innaugural Breeze winners were Bruce Kemmerer and Susan Gailey. Six-time winner Barry Harwick set the 5K course record with a time of 14:56 in 1987, a mark that has stood for a quarter century. The women's course record is held by Roberta Groner, who clocked in at 17:08 in 2017. Seven women have repeated as top female runner, with Chris Scarvelis and Ann Mazur topping that list as four-time winners.
